I moved to Hawaii at 18 so I never really knew what May Day was all about until I had children of my own. Haleakala Waldorf Maui is my son’s school and this year will be my 5th May Day celebration with them. I love the ceremony and performances but the part I think I like best is all the preparation the day before. Fresh materials are collected and parents and children hang out and make lei’s. This year I learned to make a complicated haku lei for my son which took me over an hour. Half way through the ADD in me wanted to quit, but the OCD in me just had to finish! I had a good laugh at myself as a result, but I made a lovely lei!
