My son Axel recently had to change schools. He has been a little moody to say the least. He is at a stage in his life where he just wants to be like everybody else. It is hard when you are not only the new kid in class, but you are the only blonde. Not only is he the only blonde, but his hair is a glowing, extra terrestrial white. He is not quite ready to celebrate the fact that he is an individual and incredibly unique. Change is hard when you’re 8, but he is resilient, and he is adapting. I am so proud to be his mom and I am thoroughly encouraged by the fact that he is able to take a heroic leap into the unknown.

My thoughts. Still reeling. What an incredible 3 days. All photography. All day long. I am inspired. I am humbled. It is about the art. It is about the heart. It is about the vision. It is about the craft. It is about the geek. It is about nurturing both sides. It was a marathon of a conference. Up early, classes all day, little to eat, final lectures from 8-10pm, home at 11pm and repeat the next day. Not wanting to miss a thing. Hanging out with photography masters. Feeling intimated. Being brave and asking questions. Meeting all kinds of photographers, sharing work. Finally learning why I like the photos I do and tips to make them again. Setting goals. Taking a photo that has something to say. Maximizing mood. Drawing the eye. Allowing color to control the mood. Having the photo tell a story. Doing what I love to do. Listening to criticism. Post processing. Lightroom. Photoshop. Apple logo’s, technology, equipment lust. Watching the PC people squirm. Mindfullness. Portfolio review. Seeing my photos on the ballroom’s big screen. Wanting to hide under the table. Feeling proud. Nurturing my vision. See you again next year. I can’t wait.

Susan 36 weeks ~ Maui Maternity Photographer

This is Susan’s first child. She and her love are keeping the sex a secret from themselves despite near daily access to modern ultrasound equipment as part of her job as a critical care nurse. She says she loves being pregnant and growing a life. I say she is doing a fabulous job at it and looking very radiant while doing it. She is working right up until the end and pictured here she only has a few weeks to go. We had a really fun, easy going morning shoot at Baldwin Beach on an early August morning. Welcome to motherhood Susan! You are going to be wonderful. Wishing you a very safe and smooth delivery!

Maui Centenarian.

Meet Phylliss. She is 105. Almost. Tomorrow is her actual birthday, but we celebrated today. She was born in 1905 in North Dakota. By age 10 in 1915 after hearing an ukulele in San Francisco, she knew she needed to move to Hawaii. She moved to Lahaina in 1928, spent her first night at the Pioneer Inn and taught home economics at Lahainaluna High School. I think everyone feels a bit honored to be in her presence. I know I do. As an ER nurse I meet a lot of people who are experts at falling apart, breaking to pieces, general self destruction and dying too young. It is not often I meet someone who is an expert at staying alive. I wonder at what she knows, what she has seen and what her secrets are. I first met Phyliss when she was 102 and was completely enthralled by her. When I heard she was having another birthday, I had visions of an extraordinary birthday portrait session. But when I got to her grand old style plantation home I completely lost my cool. She lives at home with her daughters who must be 70 or 80. Her husband who found a way to make water run uphill for plantation irrigation, has long passed away. She read Skye a story and sang us a Norwegian melody. I politely asked if I could snap a few photos, but I didn’t quite have the nerve to set up the shot as I had envisioned. I realize that I will have to go back and I will not wait long.

Lily Meola ~ Maui Soul Singer

Lily Meola found her calling very early in life. It is her voice. She absolutely lives to sing and has a gift to share. Can you believe she is only a freshman in high school? I can’t. She is just an incredibly talented person who is a lot of fun to hang around with. Besides having lots of spunk, which is something I really admire in a girl, she also makes shell jewelry, skateboards, and does regular teenage girl things. Toby is her keyboard player and they are not dating. She is currently recording her debut CD and will be live at Moana Cafe in Paia this August 22 from 6-8pm. I personally invite you all to go check them out, it’s gonna be a great night.

Morning session at Mama’s. Comically you can see that little Bode was a little slow to warm up. In fact this session almost didn’t happen as little Bode cracked his forehead open on the coffee table just the day before and spent a few hours in the Emergency Room (my day job) getting stitched up! If you look close you can see the bandaid. He is the cutest little rascal and his parents obviously have a lot of love. Hope you are feeling the love in your own life. Enjoy.

Tatiana, my children and I spent a morning by a secret waterfall on Maui’s north shore. Tatiana is not only an accomplished kitesurfer, windsurfer, surfer and stand up paddler, but she is very good at Yoga which helps her balance it all out. She is a lovely person inside and out, and she just glows.
